Over the years I have been involved in the web industry, user requirements have changed frequently, as have coding methods and associated web standards.

As the web has developed, so have the guidelines and general rules for delivering web content. While in the early days of the web much emphasis was placed on flashy on-screen effects and bells and whistles, more recent trends have gone back to basics and the application of rules concerning coding and layout.

Separation of Design and Content

A key development had been the separation of design from content, allowing code to be cleaner, templates to be neater and more flexible, and assisting in the delivery of clear and accurate content - essential in ensuring cross-browser compatibility and successful SEO.

In the old days template design - font colours, generic graphics, text sizes - would be incorporated into the HTML along with the content, making sites difficult to manage and maintain. With the advent of more cogent guidelines set down by the W3C, developers have been using CSS to determine core layout styles and design, with the HTML or XHTML being used to deliver clear and accurate content.

There are even more guidelines that go beyond these standards - those concerning usability and accessibility. you can find out more about these concepts by reading about the Design Principles that I follow.

These three basic principles are applied to all sites I build, from bespoke projects through to the fixed-price packages that I offer. Click the links to find out more.
